halloween

halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays. i know its not october yet but the weather is starting to get cooler (as cool as it can in florida this time of year), department stores have stocked the aisles with candy and costumes, and the freaks are ready to be the norm. time to dust of my sisters of mercy, swans and danzig cds. here are a few of my drawings with a halloween theme. each one has a haiku if you would like to read them or see other silly drawing by van cannon kirby you can go to haikus & charicatoos. happy halloween everyone a bit early!

the cure

as many of you know my favorite band, since elementary school, is the cure. i have a cure tattoo that i got when i turned 18. many folks have a hard time reconciling my redneck ways and my music tastes. just a good ol boy from the south who happens to listen to good music. i just found out that i will be going to see the cure on sept. 13th. it will be the 6th time that i have seen them in concert but i am excited all the same. Übermensch

so last friday i showed "superman returns" for film night. another film that a lot of my friends didnt like but that i enjoyed very much. i especially loved the nod to nietzsche with the headline on the paper "superman is dead" and then i really enjoyed when the camera pans out to reveal yet another paper with the heading "superman is alive."

match point

showed "match point" for film night on friday. discussion was excellent. helped that i am teaching both "crime & punishment" and "crimes and misdemeanors" in class right now, since "c&m" is an existentialists(woody allen) retelling of "c&p" and "match point" is woody allen retelling "c&m." alot of people hated on this film but i really enjoyed it. woody allen seems to really want to believe, he just cant make himself. never-the-less, a beautifully made film and a nice change to more recent woody allen films.

nick cave & the proposition

i think ive been a nick cave fan from birth even though i didnt start listening to his music till high school. his music, poetry, lectures, plays and novel resonate like no others. when i was in college i spent a long time trying to find his novel, "and the ass saw the angel," and finally found it at a used book store in amsterdam. now you can order it just about anywhere online. i fell in love with the book and have now read it a several times. it had a dirty southern feel like flanery o'connor that i love. when i heard he had written a screenplay and that it was being made into a movie, i could hardly wait. "the proposition" holds so much; extreme violence, darkness, dirt, history, sadness and longing, depravity and redemption. what a great film!

j.d. salinger

im a huge jd salinger fan. i picked up "catcher in the rye" in high school, finished it that day and with in the next few weeks had read everything he had published in book form (which isnt much). ive been waiting for him to die for sometime now so that maybe the piles of stuff hes written, but wont let anyone read, will be published. dont get too excited, he hasnt died yet. but i did find a website that has a bunch of his unpublished writings. in college i had tried to search the web for his twelve short stories that had been published without his consent and although i found several sites advertising the work, all came up dead ends. most saying they were involved in a law suit with the author or apologizing to "mr j.d. salinger" and had removed the work from the site. once, my brother saw a copy of the book in a used book store, figured i already had the book, asked me about it the next day, i yelled at him, he went back to the store and the copy had been sold for $1. i could of killed him!!! well if you are also a fan and have been searching these many years, heres the site. j.d. salinger, uncollected writings. enjoy!

film night

watched two films this weekend. "the exorcism of emily rose" (which i had seen) and "brick" (which i hadnt seen). i showed emily rose for student film night on friday which went very well. we didnt have a lot of students show up but i half expected that due to the type of movie but discussion of the film was excellent. brick, i just bought because my brother-in-law had recommended to me quite some time ago. very cool film. someone has definitely been watching a lot of "twin peaks." i highly recommend it for anyone who wants an alternative to most the crap out there on the rental shelves.

paint like a pollock

"autumn rhythm" by jackson pollock

the other day i was looking for new digital slides for my class and i stumbled across this webpage, jacksonpollock.org. if youve ever said, "even i could do that!" well now you really can. click your mouse and the paint color changes.

the abstract expressionists have aways been my favotrite painters. robert motherwell being my all time favorite but pollock will do in a pinch. pollock was a part of the "gesture field" group where the process of the painting was maybe more important then the end result. the ultimate goal was to record motion. and for all you chaos theory freaks, pollock denied the accident.

philly art & friends

great friends and great art. you cant ask for a better combination. these are the pictures i promised from our trip to philly over christmas break. the philadelphia museum of art has such a great permanent collection. this was our second visit to the museum. its becoming a tradition to go when we are visiting leahs mom. afterwards we went to south philly and got cheese steaks at jim's steaks. they were delicious!! maybe that should be apart of the tradition.

os guinness

kiko wins! it was os guinness that i had the pleasure of hanging out (more like follow or stalk) with all day friday. one of the perks of being a photographer in the reformed circle is that you get paid to meet some pretty cool people. i was hired by berean christian academy to follow os around and take pictures during his visit to the school. he was there to speak to the teachers and at their annual gala and impact fund raiser. he was an extremely nice man. got to talk to him a bit about cultural apologetics and his time with schaffer but most importantly his guinness beer family and the history of the brewery.

trying to figure out which one i like better, the color or b&w version. maybe u can help me out deciding.

yet another blog

i know i know, "another blog?" its a bit crazy but i wanted a place to post pics of friends, articles, ideas, music, art and just general crap and it just didnt seem to fit on any of my other blogs. maybe its just my natural tendency to dichotomize things. a product of the fall. maybe thats why i titled it "foucaults outhouse" or is it "foucault southouse"??? wouldnt he just luv that... words wurds werds. okay now im babbling, but that kinda fits as well.

anyway, the first thing i want to do is post up some pics from a visit to the philly museum of art with some old friends.
